Founded in 1905 by Croatian youth and its professor of gymnastics, the club is today considered the oldest existing football club in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since the 2013/2014 season, Zrinjski Mostar has competed annually in qualifying for a European competition, but has always failed. Also this year it looks rather bad, because with the FC Utrecht from the Dutch Eredivisie Zrinjski Mostar in the second round of qualifying for the Europa League a big chunk in front of the chest. For the Dutch it is the first competitive game of the season. Through the in-country playoffs, FC Utrecht got a ticket to qualify for the Europa League. Last season, the club finished in fifth place and then prevailed against Heracles Almelo and finally against Vitesse Arnheim before the second participation in qualifying for the Europa League in a row was established. In the last season Utrecht failed there only in the playoffs at Zenit St. Petersburg after extra time. For the last time in a group stage of a European competition, the club participated in the season 2010/2011 - then also in the Europa League. Curious: With only one defeat but five draws, Utrecht was in a group with, inter alia, Liverpool and Naples just bottom lag.

For the new season, Utrecht poached especially in the domestic Eredivisie and got Vaclav Cerny from Ajax Amsterdam, Adrian Dalmau from Heracles Almelo and Adam Maher from AZ Alkmaar. Otherwise, Utrecht used largely in the lower leagues of the country as far as possible. Overall, the club invested just under 1.5 million euros in new players. On the other hand, Utrecht took 3.5 million euros. Alone 3.1 million euros were flushed for Nicolas Gavory in the coffers. The defensive man was one of the mainstays last season and has played in 35 out of 38 games in the Eredivisie. His departure certainly weighs heavily. Apart from that, Utrecht let only Lukas Görtler pull out, who came in the preseason only in half of all games used as well as replacement keeper Nick Marsman.

The game against Zrinjski Mostar is Utrecht's first competitive game of the season. The preparation was rather mixed. Against the Dutch amateur club Montfoort there was a befitting 9: 0, against the SV Meppen from the 3rd league Utrecht won after scoreless 45 minutes but only on penalties. Against Antwerp from Belgium Utrecht lost despite a 2: 1 half-time lead at the end with 2: 3. On Thursday, the Dutch are considered the clear favorite. However, in the match between Utrecht and Zrinjski Mostar, the odds of a home win are very low.

Although it is the first competitive game for Utrecht in the new season, the team is much better rated than the opponent. At home, the Dutch will want to shoot a comfortable lead in order to take it a little easier in the second leg. An early goal could be the can opener. And I think the home side will be out to make the cover in the second half. Therefore, in the match between Utrecht and Zrinjski Mostar, I recommend the recommendation for good odds that the hosts meet in both halves.

Utrecht are the big favourites with the bookmakers to win Thursday’s 1st leg, which is hardly a surprise given the fact that they play in a higher quality league on a regular basis, possess a stronger squad, and have more European experience than their Bosnia and Herzegovina guests. Zrinjski is the former home of Luka Modric, who had an impressive loan spell at the club during the 2003/04 season, and the team have six league titles and one domestic cup win in their 114-year history. Now though, the club fails to boast any household names and is comprised mostly of players from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, with a couple from nearby Serbia and Montenegro, and one player representing Nigeria.

Utrecht’s last match, the 2nd leg of the Europa League playoff final against Vitesse, set them up to face Krinjski, as Dessers’ first-half effort was added to during the second forty-five by Gustafson to make the aggregate score 3-1. Zrinjski were beaten in their opening league game of the new season 1-0 away at Sarajevo but that match did arrive just three days after the club had defeated Akademija Pandev 3-0 at home to wrap up a 6-0 aggregate victory.

The form and performances of both teams heading into Thursday’s 1st leg, along with the stature of both clubs and the quality of opposition they face on a regular basis, suggests that both teams will score and that Utrecht are the most likely winners. Utrecht haven’t played any matches since their Europa League playoff final 2nd leg against Vitesse at the end of May, while Zrinjski have already started their new season and have been playing friendlies and qualifying matches during July, so match fitness should not be an issue. Both teams scored in three of Utrecht’s last six matches and Zrinjski have only failed to score in two of their last six matches. Utrecht are unbeaten in their last five matches and have picked up four wins during that period, which is why we’re backing a 2-1 win for the hosts on Thursday.
Free soccer tips
Utrecht haven’t played in the qualifiers so far and therefore have no goals in this competition as of yet, but both Govedarica and Mandic have scored two goals each in the Europa League this season for Zrinjski and will be dreaming of adding to their tallies against a team of Utrecht’s quality. We’re confident that both teams will score on Thursday and have predicted a final scoreline of 2-1 to Utrecht. The only thing stopping us backing a more comfortable victory for the hosts is the fact they haven’t played any friendlies since qualifying for the Europa League back in May, while their guests have been involved in friendlies and have started their new domestic campaign this month and will be up to speed.
